THAT'S MY BOY

That’s my boy, also known as “one of the typical Adam Sandler movies.”

A few things in life are constant. You will have traffic when you are late, you will always meet someone important after you spill something on your pants, and Adam Sandler movies will be all alike. “That’s my boy” is no different for the perpetually trapped in the 80’s Sandler.

Sandler movies consist of: 80’s soundtrack, awkward main character that gets made fun of by others, Sandler acting with a goofy voice from back when he was a comedian, Sandler with silly hair, strangely endearing old woman who says and does inappropriate things, and what I like to call the Sandler gross out.

The Sandler “gross out” is some sort of movie madness that attempts to make you cringe because of the awkwardness, grossness, or surprising character behavior. This movie will make you laugh because of the train wreck effect. You want to see what craziness will happen next, but it really has nothing to do with the plot.

Donny (Adam Sandler) was a grade school kid who was seduced and exposed by his grade school teacher who gets pregnant before she goes to prison shooting Donny into the infamous tabloid spotlight. Todd (Andy Samberg) is his son, who changed his name from Han Solo to start life anew after not so awesome father figure, Donny, dropped out of his life. Donny needs money or he goes to prison for not paying income taxes. Todd is now a well-to-do broker getting married, and succeeding in life. So Donny shows up on the doorstep winning over the soon-to-be family and creating discomfort to the son he’s trying to get money from.

Silliness, gross deeds, inappropriate behavior, unbelievable plot turns, cameos from people whom have fallen out of the limelight, drinking, nudity, and WTF moments. Yep, it’s a typical Adam Sandler movie. Attempt to heartwarming ending ruined by odd character portrayal and we’re done. If you like Sandler movies, this will be your cup of tea. If you don’t get him, you won’t like it. You will laugh at the odd behavior and “oh crap!” moments, but once you’ve seen it…. You can check it off the list and let it blend into your past.

Madagascar 3 - Europe's Most Wanted

I’d be “Lion” if I told you it was bad.

Usually by the time a “kids” movie hits the triquel (sequel + 1) level you don’t expect too much out of it. Studios sometimes send them straight to video. Well throw that thinking away! (At least for Madagascar).

They’re all back. Alex (Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock), Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith), Melman (David Schwimmer), the Penguins, King Julien, the Chimps, and it’s another crazy ride. The penguins and chimps left to get help and gamble at Monte Carlo and Alex is getting tired of waiting for their return to save them from Madagascar and take them back to their zoo in New York. That leaves only one thing to do, get back on their own.

The zoo crew shows up in Monte Carlo where they stir up some trouble and get a predatory animal control officer, Captain Chantel DuBois, on their tails. Pretending to be circus animals, they escape on a circus train. The plan is to travel to London, perform for an American talent agent, and head back to New York. There are only a few hitches. The circus performs poorly, Captain Dubois will not give up the hunt, and they need an act.

This movie made kids squeal with laughter, adults chuckle out loud, and had music and quotes that stuck with you for the rest of the day. You’re kids will love the movie, even if they haven’t seen the first two movies. You may be surprised if after the movie you feel the urge to buy a rainbow afro wig. Grab the kids and go have some fun.

Snow White and the Huntsman (Universal)

The same story, told a newer way.

I was a bit skeptical with this one. It seems like there’s a Snow White everywhere you turn now-a-days. I wasn’t too sure Kristen Stewart could pull off anything but a troubled teen in love with a glittering vampire. This movie proved me wrong. It’s a new take on the same old fairy tale with a new twist.

Snow White (Stewart) has been locked away in a tower since her father’s murder at the hands of Ravenna (Charlize Theron) who uses her evil magic to drain the life out of the land and the peasants. Just when the Queen finds out Snow White’s heart can make her immortal, wouldn’t you know it, she escapes. Enter hunk-man Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who finds himself tricked into tracking Snow down in the Dark Woods. And William (Sam Claflin), the Duke’s son, who once finding out his childhood friend is still alive, sets off to find and save Snow and bring peace to the land.

Now you have the plot.

The special effects in this movie were spot on. Even the full sized people playing dwarves were skillfully done. Theron plays the Evil Queen very well, Hemsworth’s part as Thor didn’t bleed into this movie, and it was a nice darker take on the favorite children’s classic. Then again, the Grimm versions of fairy tales were meant to be dark and scary. I was impressed with Stewart and they didn’t cast her as an unbelievable heroin like I had feared. She was a nice mixture of strong, yet helpless at time. I’m also happy that they avoided the obvious urge to make a love triangle with William, Huntsman, and Snow.

If you're expecting the same stuff from the ABC show, don't. You're in for something awesome in it's own right.

Definitely a “must see” for those who like their villains bad and all special effects fans.

MEN IN BLACK 3

Columbia Pictures

Better than expected, and timeless. I went into the theater not expecting much more than what is currently being offered in this new era of remake and sequel and was actually surprised at how good this movie was. Men in Black was funny, original, and great. MIB 2 was ok. Men in Black 3 brings it all home.

Agent K is looking weary and old, Tommy Lee Jones’ part could actually be considered small. Young Agent K (Josh Brolin) and Agent J (Will Smith) do all of the heavy lifting against the new alien threat to Earth, Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clememt). Agent J doesn’t have the same spring in his step like in the earlier movies, but he still has a lot of mileage still in him. Boris escapes a moon prison after 40 years. His plan is to time travel to when the Young Agent K shot off his arm and arrested him. Boris means to murder Agent K allowing him to alter the time line and pave the way for his race to conquer Earth. K is still the leathery senior agent full of secrets, J is still the wise-cracking agent now seasoned, and Zed is dead (I guess Rip Torn was too busy to revise his role) and replaced by Agent O (Emma Thompson). The movie also pays homage to Frank the Pug in subtle background moments, leading one to assume Tim Blaney was also unavailable to reprise the voice.

Agent J follows Boris back in time to save his partner from being murdered, restore the time line, and to find out some of the “secrets” K always keeps from him. Boris is an odd spine shooting alien that reminded me of a cross between predator and Dr. House. The movie flowed well and was very amusing. I think they rounded off the relationship with Agent J and K rather well, illuminating some of the communication issues the pair had. Brolin nails the Agent K character that we’ve grown to love, even down to his mannerisms.

Whenever there’s a time traveling movie, watchers tend to over think it after the movie is finished, and this film is no different, but keep in mind, it’s just a movie.  No space time continuums were ripped apart and look for a likeable character named Griffin. I saw the movie in 3D and it is worth the extra money to add the extra dimension.

Definitely put this one on your “to see” list.

LOS LOBOS ANNOUNCE AUGUST 21 "KIKO 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION" CD AND "KIKO LIVE" CD, DVD, BLU-RAY

“A dark, dreamlike masterpiece from rock`s reigning roots rockers.”
-        Greg Kot, The Chicago Tribune, 1992

Kiko takes spectacular songwriting and arranges it brilliantly; it is the band's breakthrough album.”
-         Peter Watrous, The New York Times, 1992

“Strong, versatile, intelligent and heartfelt, Los Lobos long has held a secure place on the roots-rock honor roll, but Kiko is the band's masterpiece--a startling leap forward in sonic reach and depth of vision.”
-  Mike Boehm, The Los Angeles Times, 1992

Los Lobos is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album Kiko with the August 21 release of Kiko 20th Anniversary Edition on CD, and Kiko Live on CD, DVD and a 2-disc Blu-ray/CD set from Shout! Factory. The Kiko 20th Anniversary Edition features bonus material including demo versions of album tracks and live recordings, and new liner notes written by Los Angeles journalist and longtime friend of the band, Luis Torres. Kiko Live captures their February 24, 2006, performance at the House Of Blues in San Diego, CA, where the band performed the critically acclaimed release in its entirety, during a string of shows devoted to the album. Never before released or broadcast, Kiko Live also contains interviews with the band and others involved in the making of the studio album.

Released in 1992, Kiko was embraced by fans and hailed by critics as the band’s defining moment, the album that put Los Lobos back on the innovation track. The album, wrote All Music Guide, “demonstrated the breadth of their sonic ambitions.” Kiko was produced by Mitchell Froom, who received a Grammy nomination for Producer of the Year for his work on the album, and who had previously collaborated with the band on La Bamba. Dubbed “the album of the year” by the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, and one of “The Essential Recordings of the ‘90s” by Rolling Stone, Los Lobos also took home an MTV Music Video Award for Breakthrough Video for “Kiko and the Lavender Moon” in 1993.

Prior to Kiko, Los Lobos had been “segregating our influences, treating them parochially,” as Steve Berlin puts it: a rockabilly tune here, a Tex-Mex there, some folk, a bit of country, an R&B tune, plenty of classic rock. This time, they decided to take all of those myriad influences out of their separate boxes, toss them into the air and let them fall where they might. “Whatever our unconscious minds’ response was to the stimuli, that was what we wanted. We let our imagination take over and didn’t try to control it.”

They began recording new original Hidalgo-Pérez compositions such as “Two Janes,” “Peace,” “Arizona Skies,” “Short Side of Nothing” and “Rio de Tenampa,” self-producing and following their instincts sound-wise. Comments the band’s Cesar Rosas, “With that album we didn’t want to be tied down to all the conventional ways of recording, so we started experimenting and making up sounds.”

To date the beloved band from East L.A. has recorded 18 albums, including their most recent studio album, 2010’s Tin Can Trust. They’ve won multiple Grammy Awards, and continue to tour regularly. Born out of the desire to have a community-conscious event celebrating food, culture and music in their hometown, Los Lobos recently held the 1st Annual Los Lobos Cinco de Mayo Festival at Los Angeles’ iconic Greek Theatre. The festival featured performances by preeminent LA bands X and Mariachi El Bronx, among others, with special guests Neko Case, Alejandro Escovedo, Dave Alvin, Phil Alvin, and Flaco Jiménez joining Los Lobos on stage.

Next year Los Lobos will celebrate 40 years together, a monumental achievement in a world where bands come and go in the blink of an eye. A rare example of longevity in a volatile music world that stresses style over substance, Los Lobos’ lineup has remained uninterrupted since 1984, when Berlin joined original members Louie Pérez, David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, and Conrad Lozano, each of whom had been there since the beginning in 1973.

“This is what happens when five guys create a magical sound, then stick together for 30 years to see how far it can take them,” wrote Rolling Stone, and indeed, Los Lobos is a band that continually reboots itself and expands its scope with each passing year, while never losing sight of where they came from.

“There’s this thing that still happens, this musical thing,” says Pérez. “But if you took everything away, even the music, you’d still end up with four guys who were friends and hung out and grew up in the same neighborhood. And you can’t take that friendship away from us.”
