The Not Fade Away Soundtrack Announced, Available December 18th

Produced by Steven Van Zandt:
Music from the Motion Picture Not Fade Away

Featuring Music from The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan,
James Brown, the Rascals, Sex Pistols, and More

Not Fade Away, the widely anticipated feature film debut from The Sopranos creator David Chase is an ode to the transformative power of rock ‘n’ roll. In 1964, the Rolling Stones appear on television and three best friends from the suburbs of New Jersey decide to form a rock band. The film stars John Magaro, Jack Huston, Will Brill, Bella Heathcote, Brad Garrett, Christopher McDonald and James Gandolfini.

The film’s forthcoming soundtrack on ABKCO Records chronicles the sounds that inspired a generation to pursue dreams of rock stardom and glory. The soundtrack, set for digital release on December 18th, will be available at iTunes and all other digital download stores. Not Fade Away, a Paramount Vantage film, opens in select theaters on December 21st, 2012.

Because music is so central to the film, Chase worked closely with executive producer Steven Van Zandt in compiling recordings that are evocative of the era and propel the narrative of Chase’s screenplay. Van Zandt played Silvio Dante in Chase’s The Sopranos over the course of the groundbreaking series’ six seasons on HBO and in 2002, created “Little Steven’s Underground Garage,” a nationally syndicated rock radio show on SiriusXM Satellite Radio. He is a long-standing member of the E Street Band.

Thanks to Van Zandt’s efforts, the film’s soundtrack includes music from the Rolling Stones, Bo Diddley, Bob Dylan, Sex Pistols, James Brown, The Rascals, Van Morrison, Robert Johnson, Elmore James and many others. The soundtrack album also includes several songs performed by the band members portrayed in the film by actors Magaro and Huston, who cut their own vocal tracks, which were produced by Van Zandt. Tell Me and Parachute Woman are two classic Rolling Stones tracks featured on the Not Fade Away soundtrack release.

Van Zandt commented, “David Chase realizes that in film, like Bruce Springsteen in music, the more detailed, accurate, and nuanced the personal vision, the more compelling the work ends up being. Helping David realize his vision was one of the most satisfying projects of my life. Watching these young actors meet every challenge we threw at them was also quite inspiring.” Chase added, “Music is obviously the soul of this film. And working on the music, especially with Steven, was certainly the favorite part. John Magaro and Jack Huston sing on these tracks and they really stand up.”

The ABKCO soundtrack includes the original versions of the songs that inspired the formation of the band whose story is at the core of the film, as well as music played by the band as heard in the film.

Oz the Great and Powerful Trailer Now Available

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful wizard but into a better man as well.

“Oz The Great and Powerful” is produced by Joe Roth, with a screenplay by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire (credit not final). Grant Curtis, Palak Patel, Philip Steuer and Josh Donen are serving as executive producers.

JIM JARMUSCH & JOZEF VAN WISSEM SHARE "ETIMASIA" VIA NPR

THE MYSTERY OF HEAVEN AVAILABLE NOW FROM SACRED BONES

Acclaimed lutist Jozef Van Wissem & American Auteur Jim Jarmusch have already announced their 2nd LP for this year, The Mystery of Heaven. Today, they share the album artwork, track-list & single from the album. Etimasia the 1st single from the album, features Van Wissem's incredible & fragile lute playing, while Jarmusch provides dissonance with his guitar. Together the two paint a beautiful sonic landscape, all while pondering mortality. Hear the track now at NPR.

About Jozef Van Wissem & Jim Jarmusch

Jim Jarmusch and Jozef Van Wissem met on the streets of New York in 2006. They shared a lot of interest and background so a collaboration and a friendship was born. Jarmusch was looking to have Van Wissem compose a score for a film he had been trying to make for years, what he described as a “crypto-vampire film” about two lovers, outsider types who have been in love for hundreds of years. Van Wissem's work comes from a tradition of avant-garde minimalism and lends itself well to the director's stark cinematic works. Jarmusch has played guitar in bands on and off since the late '70's. Van Wissem's compositional style involves hypnotic circular musical phrases that allow for a lot of contemplative space between the notes.

Their first live performance was in Issue Project Room in Brooklyn in October 2011, where they appeared together for a Van Wissem curated concert program called New Music for Early Instruments. The idea for their first album, Concerning the Entrance Into Eternity (Important Records) developed from their live performance. Jarmusch has said that he considers these songs as Van Wissem's compositions, and sees himself as someone filling in the background to Jozef's foreground, like the “scenic” on a film shoot, the one who paints the backdrops. “The sound of the lute is as bright as the sun, a beautiful red color and my stuff sounds sort of like the moon, more like blue, like mercury.”

Quentin Tarantino presents The Man With the Iron Fists, an action-adventure inspired by kung-fu classics as interpreted by his longtime collaborators RZA and Eli Roth.  Making his debut as a big-screen director and leading man, RZA—alongside a stellar international cast led by Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu—tells the epic story of warriors, assassins and a lone outsider hero in nineteenth-century China who must unite to destroy the clan traitor who would destroy them all.

Since his arrival in China’s Jungle Village, the town’s blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction.  When the clans’ brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon.  As he fights alongside iconic heroes and against soulless villains, one man must harness this power to become savior of his adopted people.

Blending astonishing martial-arts sequences from some of the masters of this world with the signature vision he brings as the leader of the Wu-Tang Clan and as one of hip-hop’s most dominant figures of the past two decades, RZA embarks upon his most ambitious, stylized and thrilling project to date.  www

Werner Herzog-Narrated "Dinotasia" out on DVD 11/6/12; NYC Theatrical 10/26 - 11/1 at IFC

The film will run theatrically for one week in New York City – from Friday, October 26, 2012 through Thursday, November 1, 2012 – at IFC Center (323 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10014; 212-924-7771).  For tickets ($13.50) and more information please visit http://www.ifccenter.com/films/dinotasia.

“The Sunday Times said it best,” says Erik Nelson, co-director and producer for the film, “when they called Dinotasia the ‘Sopranos of the Mesozoic.’”

Dintotasia is not a typical documentary or nature film, but a love letter to fans of bizarre, graphic novel-style film vignettes and classic film animation.  Wer ner Herzog, an early fan of the project, lends his unique voice as narrator, serving as a tour guide to the strange world of Dinotasia.  Here, in Dinotasia, audiences can feast their eyes on mind-blowing segments including the saga of a dinosaur family under siege from a rogue T-Rex, a post-apocalyptic narrative set after an asteroid destroys most of the earth, and a story about the mind-blowing adventures of a dinosaur after he ingests the Jurassic ancestor of a magic mushroom.  Definitely not the narrative diet of most dinosaur films.  In fact, not the diet of any film creation, save Dinotasia.  The fact that all of these stories are based on hard science and the fossil record makes the end product even more amazing.

The animated stories are told in a purely visual style not seen since the classic era of silent filmmaking and the pioneering early work of Walt Disney Studios.  Aside from brief  “Herzogia n” narration to introduce each sequence, the film has no character dialogue, just music and imagery.  Based on current research findings from recent paleontology studies, Dinotasia uses CGI to bring to life many creatures that have been discovered in recent years.  The back plates for the animated action were primarily shot in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, and in the old-growth forest of Humboldt County in Northern California.

Dinotasia was co-directed by Erik Nelson, best known for his work with Herzog on his documentary features including Grizzly Man and Cave of Forgotten Dreams, with David Krentz, the lead character designer for a number of Disney films, including John Carter and Dinosaur.

FRANKENWEENIE

Disney
Release Date: October 5th, 2012

FRANKENWEENIE is by far Tim Burton's greatest film since A Nightmare Before Christmas. Forget the Nightmare-rehash Corpse Bride, the over the top formulaic Alice, or the catastrophically bad remake of Planet of the Apes. Just when I had nearly given up hope of a quality Burton film (especially one sans Mr Depp and Ms. Bonham-Carter) this film is a lightning rod that has resurrected hope back to life. FRANKENWEENIE is an endearing homage to the black and white Monster classics of yore. In it Burton blends the legendary Frankenstein story arc of a boy and his monster with his own signature style of colorful characters in a world painted only in shades of gray. Though a remake of his own original live action film, this new creepy animated romp is still quite fun, fresh, and full of thrills and amusements for all ages. FRANKENWEENIE is a must see in 3D.

Disney Publishing Worldwide <http://www.disneypublishing.com> announced the release of Frankenweenie: An Electrifying Book http://iTunes.com/Frankenweenie, based on Walt Disney Studios’ highly anticipated stop-motion animated film directed by Tim Burton, “Frankenweenie,” in theaters October 5, 2012.  Capturing the creative process from concept to completion, the interactive book integrates videos, vibrant music, and original sketches to offer readers a fully immersive behind-the-scenes look into the making of the movie.  Available on the iBookstore, this book is Disney Publishing’s first to be created with Apple’s iBooks Author.

“We’re thrilled to give fans a look at how Tim Burton and his creative team brought Victor Frankenstein and Sparky to life in the town of New Holland,” said Lyle Underkoffler, vice president, Digital Media, Disney Publishing Worldwide. “Using iBooks Author, Disney Publishing was able to include more digital content than ever before—including previews of animated storyboards documenting the transition from sketch to screen.”

Frankenweenie: An Electrifying Book http://iTunes.com/Frankenweenie incorporates a brief history of the 1984 live-action short film and details the upcoming full-length stop-motion animated feature, including a foreword by Academy Award®-winning actor Martin Landau (the voice of Mr. Rzykruski in the film) and introductions to over 200 resident puppets of New Holland (with a special introduction to Victor and Sparky), as well as a look into “The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition,” now on tour.

A chapter on the film’s music includes previews of each track from the original motion picture score by Oscar®-nominated and GRAMMY®-winning composer Danny Elfman and from Frankenweenie Unleashed!, a 14-song compilation of music from and inspired by the film, featuring artists including Karen O, Neon Trees, and Kimbra.  Both albums will be available from Walt Disney Records on September 25 and can be purchased directly from within the book.

Using Apple’s iBooks Author app, Disney Publishing was able to include video, audio, multi-touch, and 3D widgets to create a robust storytelling experience that enlightens “Frankenweenie” fans of all ages.  Readers can watch interviews featuring producer Allison Abbate and executive producer Don Hahn and explore the art of stop-motion animation with Tim Burton, while younger fans can create their own “chalkboard collage” using the film’s characters.

“Thirty years after he first visualized 'Frankenweenie' as a student at CalArts, Tim Burton has finally made the movie he dreamed of making way back then,” said Martin Landau, voice of Mr. Rzykruski in the film. "The eBook reveals how a truncated, live-action version made by Tim three decades ago evolved into the 90-minute, black-and-white, stop-motion (Tim’s favorite animation process), 3D motion picture that he visualized all those years ago.  It’s wonderful that Tim has managed to keep Victor and his friends young, energetic, and alive for 30 plus years."

In addition to the eBook, Disney Publishing Worldwide has released several print books in support of the feature film, including Frankenweenie: A Cinematic Storybook, Frankenweenie: A Novel, and Frankenweenie: A Monstrous Menagerie of Stickers!  A graphic novel and a visual companion will also be available at retail in the coming months.

“Frankenweenie: An Electrifying Book http://iTunes.com/Frankenweenie is available for free exclusively on the iBookstore in 32 countries around the world.

A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” was filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which elevates the classic style to a whole new experience.

In Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie” young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

When Tim Burton originally conceived the idea for “Frankenweenie,” he envisioned it as a full-length, stop-motion animated film. Due to budget constraints, he instead directed it as a live-action short, released in 1984.

“Frankenweenie” follows in the footsteps of Tim Burton’s other stop-motion animated films “Corpse Bride” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas”—both of which were nominated for Academy Awards®.
Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film.

The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (“Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands”), Catherine O’Hara (“Beetlejuice,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas”), Martin Short (“Mars Attacks!”) and Martin Landau (“Ed Wood,” Sleepy Hollow”).
Classic horror films inspired several of the character names.

THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS - RZA

Robert Diggs, aka The RZA (Blacksmith/Directed by/Story by/Screenplay by/Music by), is a man of many aliases and even more talents.  He is the heart, soul and brains behind rap’s only true multiplatinum super group, the Wu-Tang Clan.  RZA is a man who appreciates the creation of music and the success he has had within the music industry, and he thrives on the process of creation, which he has carried over into his acting and scoring career.  For as long as he can remember, RZA wanted to be a part of the moviemaking process and was inspired while watching one of his favorite kung fu flicks.

In 1999, RZA got the first taste of living his dream.  Director Jim Jarmusch asked RZA to score Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, a modern samurai film, and offered him a cameo in the film, which helped bring him to where he is today.  As an actor, RZA has shown real range from his hilarious stints on Chappelle’s Show to the Jarmusch film Coffee and Cigarettes.  RZA next starred in the drama Derailed, alongside Clive Owen, and, most recently, Ridley Scott’s American Gangster, for which the cast garnered a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

In 2009, he was seen in the independent features Life Is Hot in Cracktown and Gospel Hill, and Universal Pictures’ Repo Men, starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker, and Funny People, starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen.

The following year, RZA was seen in Due DateThe Next Three Days and A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas.  This year, RZA appeared as Samurai Apocalypse in Showtime’s series Californication.

In 2003, RZA scored Kill Bill Vol. 1 for Quentin Tarantino, for which he received a BAFTA nomination.  In 2004, he contributed music to Barbershop 2: Back in BusinessSoul PlaneKill Bill Vol. 2 and Blade: Trinity.  In 2007, RZA scored the critically acclaimed Spike TV animated series Afro Samurai and, in 2008, Afro Samurai: Resurrection, which starred Samuel Jackson.  That same year, he also contributed to the score of the 20thCentury Fox film Babylon A.D., which starred Vin Diesel.

RZA continues to make strides within an industry that captured his attention

"SAVING MR. BANKS" BEGINS PRODUCTION IN LOS ANGELES

Screen shot 2012-07-12 at 3

Disney began production today on “Saving Mr. Banks,” the account of Walt Disney’s twenty-year pursuit of the film rights to P.L. Travers’ popular novel, Mary Poppins, and the testy partnership the upbeat filmmaker develops with the uptight author during the project’s pre-production in 1961.

Two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks (“Philadelphia,” “Forrest Gump”) will essay the role of the legendary Disney (the first time the entrepreneur has ever been depicted in a dramatic film) alongside fellow double Oscar®-winner Emma Thompson (“Howard’s End,” “Sense and Sensibility”) in the role of the prickly novelist.  Before actually signing away the book’s rights, Travers’ demands for contractual script and character control circumvent not only Disney’s vision for the film adaptation, but also those of the creative team of screenwriter Don DaGradi and sibling composers Richard and Robert Sherman, whose original score and song (Chim-Chim-Cher-ee) would go on to win Oscars® at the 1965 ceremonies (the film won five awards of its thirteen nominations).

When Travers travels from London to Hollywood in 1961 to finally discuss Disney’s desire to bring her beloved character to the motion picture screen (a quest he began in the 1940s as a promise to his two daughters), Disney meets a prim, uncompromising sexagenarian not only suspect of the impresario’s concept for the film, but a woman struggling with her own past.  During her stay in California, Travers’ reflects back on her childhood in 1906 Australia, a trying time for her family which not only molded her aspirations to write, but one that also inspired the characters in her 1934 book.

None more so than the one person whom she loved and admired more than any other—her caring father, Travers Goff, a tormented banker who, before his untimely death that same year, instills the youngster with both affection and enlightenment (and would be the muse for the story’s patriarch, Mr. Banks, the sole character that the famous nanny comes to aide).  While reluctant to grant Disney the film rights, Travers comes to realize that the acclaimed Hollywood storyteller has his own motives for wanting to make the film—which, like the author, hints at the relationship he shared with his own father in the early 20th Century Midwest.

Colin Farrell (“Minority Report,” “Total Recall”) co-stars as Travers’ doting dad, Goff, along with British actress Ruth Wilson (the forthcoming films “The Lone Ranger” and “Anna Karenina”) as his long-suffering wife, Margaret; Oscar® and Emmy® nominee Rachel Griffiths (“Six Feet Under,” “Hilary and Jackie,” “The Rookie”) as Margaret’s sister, Aunt Ellie (who inspired the title character of Travers’ novel); and a screen newcomer—11-year-old Aussie native Annie Buckley as the young, blossoming writer, nicknamed “Ginty” in the flashback sequences.

The cast also includes Emmy® winner Bradley Whitford (“The West Wing,” “The Cabin in the Woods”) as screenwriter Don DaGradi; Jason Schwartzman (“Rushmore,” “Moonrise Kingdom”) and B.J. Novak (“NBC’s “The Office,” “Inglourious Basterds”) as the songwriting Sherman Brothers (Richard and Robert, respectively); Oscar® nominee and Emmy winner Paul Giamatti (“Sideways,” “Cinderella Man,” HBO’s “John Adams”) as Ralph, the kindly limousine driver who escorts Travers during her two-week stay in Hollywood; and multi-Emmy winner Kathy Baker (“Picket Fences,” “Edward Scissorhands”) as Tommie, one of Disney’s trusted studio associates.

“Saving Mr. Banks” will be directed by John Lee Hancock (“The Blind Side,” “The Rookie”) based on a screenplay by Kelly Marcel (creator of FOX-TV’s “Terra Nova”), from a story by Sue Smith (“Brides of Christ,” “Bastard Boys”) and Kelly Marcel.  The film is being produced by Alison Owen of Ruby Films (the Oscar®-nominated “Elizabeth,” HBO’s Emmy®-winning “Temple Grandin”), Ian Collie of Essential Media (the Aussie TV documentary “The Shadow of Mary Poppins,” DirecTV’s “Rake”) and longtime Hancock collaborator Philip Steuer (“The Rookie,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” trilogy).  The film’s executive producers are Ruby Films’ Paul Trijbits (“Lay the Favorite,” “Jane Eyre”), Hopscotch Features’ Andrew Mason (“The Matrix” trilogy, “Dark City”) and Troy Lum (“Mao’s Last Dancer,” “I, Frankenstein”) and BBC Films’ Christine Langan (Oscar® nominee for “The Queen,” “We Need to Talk About Kevin”).

Hancock’s filmmaking team includes a trio of artists with whom he worked on his 2009 Best Picture Oscar® nominee, “The Blind Side”—two-time Oscar® nominated production designer Michael Corenblith (“How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Apollo 13”), Emmy®-winning costume designer Daniel Orlandi (HBO’s “Game Change,” “Frost/Nixon”) and film editor Mark Livolsi, A.C.E. (“Wedding Crashers” “The Devil Wears Prada”).  Hancock also reunites with Academy Award®-nominated cinematographer John Schwartzman (“Seabiscuit,” “Pearl Harbor”), with whom he first worked on his inspiring 2002 sports drama, “The Rookie.”

“Saving Mr. Banks” will film entirely in the Los Angeles area, with key locations to include Disneyland in Anaheim and the Disney Studios in Burbank.  Filming will conclude around Thanksgiving, 2012, with no specific 2013 release date yet set.
