Jacksonville looses another pioneer

It is with regret that we let our readers know that Jacksonville looses another great pioneer in our struggling arts scene. Tim over at the San Marco Theatre has decided to leave us. Tim has been instrumental in the Jacksonville Film Festival's beginnings, The Pit (near Riverside) where he screened countless underground films, and for turning the San Marco Theatre into a hot spot for midnight screenings of avant-garde and music related films not to mention his brilliant original series "THE TALKIES" where he would invite the director to narrate live over the film.

Below is a message from his last e-mailer...

"...not to get too maudlin on you folks but this will be my last post. i landed a new position as cinema director for a yet-to-be-built twin in minnesota. after the festival collapsed due to shear ineptitude and not being able to buy the san marco (the owner isn't interested in letting it go) and take it in to a new direction (which would have included some necessary renovations) there is nothing left fer me here. it's been a long run since moving back here from austin but it seems that i have been running in place as of late. Mother of Tears the newest Argento film will be the last midnight film to screen and THE TALKIES will continue in minnesota and will hopefully become a roadshow of sorts.

thanks for all the support you folks have provided by not only attending the midnight shows but the occasional "smaller" flick or two i was able to squeeze in such as: MAIL ORDER BRIDE, THE HOST, CONTROL, THE OSCAR SHORTS,BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD and also all the big Hollywood fare that comes thru our doors.

i had this funny idea that i was going to be able to trick jacksonville and make one corner of it a little more interesting but it seems that the vicious cabal that really runs things to keep the beast alive has won.

cheers!
tim"

He left out my personal fav MEET THE FEEBLES which I never thought I would ever get to see on the big screen. Thanks for making it a reality for us Tim. You will be deeply missed! Best of luck in all your future endeavors.

MGM ANNOUNCES CHRISTMAS RELEASE DATE FOR VALKYRIE

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures announced today they will be releasing the suspense film, VALKYRIE, from Director Bryan Singer, on Friday, December 26, 2008.

“We saw and tested the movie,” says Clark Woods, President of MGM Distribution. “and we believe a strong movie deserves a strong playdate.”

Tom Cruise stars in the suspense thriller, VALKYRIE, based on the true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (CRUISE) and the daring and ingenious plot to eliminate one of the most evil criminals the world has ever known. Director Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, X-MEN, SUPERMAN RETURNS) re-teams with Academy Award®-winning USUAL SUSPECTS screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie to bring to life the story of the men who led the operation to assassinate Hitler. The film also stars an acclaimed cast including Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Carice van Houten, Thomas Kretschmann, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel and Terence Stamp.

A proud military man, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg is a loyal officer who serves his country all the while hoping that someone will find a way to stop Hitler before Europe and Germany are destroyed. Realizing that time is running out, he decides that he must take action himself and joins the German resistance. Armed with a cunning strategy to use Hitler’s own emergency plan – known as Operation Valkyrie – these men plot to assassinate the dictator and over-throw his Nazi government from the inside. With everything in place, with the future of the world, the fate of millions and the lives of his wife and children hanging in the balance, Stauffenberg is thrust from being one of many who oppose Hitler to the one who must kill Hitler himself.

VALKYRIE is produced by Bryan Singer, Christopher McQuarrie and Gilbert Adler. McQuarrie co-wrote the original screenplay with Nathan Alexander who also serves as co-producer. The executive producers are Chris Lee, Ken Kamins, Daniel M. Snyder, Dwight C. Schar and Mark Shapiro.

The film was shot in Germany at various locations where many of the actual events occurred, including the historic Bendlerblock. Recreating the atmosphere of urgency and paranoia inside the German resistance is a team that includes Singer’s frequent collaborators Newton Thomas Sigel (SUPERMAN RETURNS, X2, X-MEN) as director of photography and editor/composer John Ottman (SUPERMAN RETURNS, X2); as well as production designers Lilly Kelvert (two-time Oscar®-nominee for THE LAST SAMURAI and LEGENDS OF THE FALL) and Patrick Lumb (THE OMEN); and costume designer Joanna Johnston (MUNICH, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN).

Adapted from the legendary comic strip, THE SPIRIT is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister FRANK MILLER (creator of 300 and SIN CITY). It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the SPIRIT (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the OCTOPUS (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront … all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are ELLEN DOLAN (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; SILKEN FLOSS (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; PLASTER OF PARIS (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; LORELEI (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and MORGENSTERN (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop. Then of course, there’s SAND SAREF (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves. She’s the love of his life turned bad. Will he save her or will she kill him? In the vein of BATMAN BEGINS and SIN CITY, THE SPIRIT takes us on a sinister, gut-wrenching ride with a hero who is born, murdered and born again.

Eight Miles High tells the incredible true story of European wild-child Uschi Obermaier. The film tracks her restless life from a small town girl in rural Bavaria to a fast-living fashion icon in Munich; from free-loving companion of the Rolling Stones to ultimately becoming the embodiment of the 60’s generation of sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll. This is one woman’s story about the discovery of freedom and the price one must ultimately pay to achieve it.
